Home business is all around

At the risk of this site starting to read like 'The Diary of Emma Jones' (eventhough my version doesn't involve fraternising with either Hugh Grant or Colin Firth..shame) today was quite different to yesterday. Saturday was Small Business 2.0 and all about starting and growing an online business. Today was 'Sunday Life' and all about meeting people who have their very own home business story.

London to Leeds. No difference inbetween.

The filming of 'Sunday Life' takes place in a converted mill studio outside of Leeds. But whether you're in London one day and Leeds the next, the home business stories just keep on coming. Today I met:

  • Glyn - who started True North Productions (the company that produces the show) from his spare room. It was in this room that Glyn and his two Directors started the business that is now the UK's 8th biggest factual independent production company.
  • A make-up artist - who started out as a bridal specialist and is now re-designing her home business and her website to do more photographic work.
  • A PR person - whos leaves her job each day to head home and design costume jewellery. She's building a part-time business that she hopes will develop into a full-time occupation when she decides to have children.
  • Freya Bletsoe - who appeared on the business slot in the show to talk about how she's turning her Grandma's toffee recipe into a modern day home business. Tasty!
  • An original WI Calendar Girl - who is supporting her home based photographer husband on calendars he's working on to raise money for charity.

It has to be a good sign when virtually everyone you touch or come across is either starting or building a business from home.

We'll be continuing with this theme tomorrow as we launch our 2008 Home Business Report to the media at the start of Small Business Week, run by BT. It will also be the start of a week-long schedule of activities on the site that will not include any more diary entries from me! - Emma Jones
