Being mentored can be the catalyst for developing new skills and improving business performance and confidence. That’s why FreshIdeas Events are showcasing mentoring successes at their next Inspiring Women event taking place on 24th September. Read on for details.
Title: Inspiring women series: Mentor event
Date: Wednesday 24 September 2008
Time: 6.30 - 9.30 pm
Venue: HSBC, 78 St James’s Street, London, SW1A 1JB
The event will look at what mentoring is, what to expect from it, the best ways to approach a mentor, benefits for the mentor and mentee and how to make the most of the relationship.
Mentor competition
To further encourage female entrepreneurs FreshIdeas Events are also running a Mentor Competition that will see ten women matched to one of the ten mentors who will spend six months helping them achieve their goals. Do you have a business idea that you know will succeed if only you had the advice and experience on how to launch it? Are you sitting on a potential ‘gold-mine’ business but lack the know-how to take it to the next level?
The competition is open for entry. You'll hear about it at the event on 24th September and get to meet some of the well-known and successful mentors.

Comment: I would encourage everyone in business to become a mentor. Even if you only have as little as a few hours a month to spare, your expertise can make a huge difference.
I was a mentor for the Prince's Trust on Merseyside for a number of years and saw young people from disadvantaged backgrounds achieve the most amazing things on a business and personal level.
To be part of something like that is humbling. The best part is seeing that young person succeed. I am still friends with one of my mentees and the best part of helping her business dreams become a reality, was when she phoned to offer me some work.

Comment: I completely echo Heather's comments above...when I first started out in business I was assigned to a mentor who funnily enough I was out having a meal with last night. Whilst our relationship started out as very much "I was the young Jedi whilst she was the Jedi Master" - it's now come full cirlce over the passage of time as she has, in her own words, seen me blossom into an able and capable business woman in my own right. However, I have never forgotten her help, advice and support in those crucial first months, and I too now support and help various SMEs and start up's. I suppose it's giving back what I was lucky enough to benefit from, but yes it's great to see other newer businesses take flight and find their own wings to soar upwards! Mentoring is fantastic and I'd definately encourage others to think about doing it too.
