Q&A with The Cheese Shed

Ian Wellens

03/11/2008 send to a friend

In what must be the shortest and most to-the-point Q&A interview we’ve ever conducted, Ian Wellens tells us about The Cheese Shed. He may be a man of few words but his advice for anyone starting an online business from a shed is spot on.

When did you launch The Cheese Shed?

In May 2006

The business is a partnership between you and James … I can see details of James's background from the site - what was yours? Had you been your own boss before? Had knowledge of the internet/IT?

I've done a few things - cabinetmaker in the 80s, then later I was an academic, teacher and composer of music. Also did a PhD and wrote a book.

How often do you and James speak?

Every day!

How are you promoting yourselves and the site?

Via PR, Google Adwords and links. Very little print advertising.

What is your most popular selling product?

The 24 Cheese Shed Selection.

Are any of your family members involved in the business?

No, just me.

What are your plans for the future?

I'd like to take The Cheese Shed as far as it can go. We all feel it has a lot of potential.

What one piece of advice would you offer to someone looking to start an online business from their shed?

Make sure the roof doesn't leak!?

Comment: Ian and all at the cheese shed are a wonderful small shedbased company.

They are always helpful with us over at shedblog/readersheds and in their capacity of Official Cheese Monger of Shed of the Year or just for their great cheese.
