There’s an interesting post on copyblogger.com on the art of successful homeworking for freelance writers. It offers just five tips with one of them being ‘go out to lunch!’

Tip 5: Go out to lunch. The writing life, especially the freelance writing life, can be isolating. And isolation leads to one thing: insanity. So set times for human contact helps, like lunch dates with clients or your fellow independently employed cohorts. For extra points — and probably extra business, too — join a business networking group.

Comment: I'd second this. When I first started as a freelance, I sometimes went days on end without actually seeing somebody and then held the local newsagent spellbound with chitchat for half an hour out of sheer desperation. Now, I make sure I get out every day for a walk and some kind of human interaction face to face rather than facebook to facebook. However, I do think the internet has helped to partway solve isolation problems - anyone fancy a game of Scrabulous?
