Wi-Fi proves popular on trains

Rail travel

We have written before about wi-fi on trains. With GNER having had so much success with their service, I hope other train operators will take note so us homeworkers can keep in touch when stepping outside the home office!

Wi-fi on the line

Train company, GNER, is celebrating the success of its on-board Wi-Fi service and has announced that it has passed the 500,000 user mark.

An article in IT Pro said that “The train operator, which completed its £3.2 million roll out seven months early in October last year, says that demand for the technology has proved extremely strong and resulted in a 77 per cent increase in usage each month.”

Alan Hyde, the company's head of communications, said the majority of passengers are using the Wi-Fi service, which is free in first class and costs between £2.95 for 30 minutes and £9.95 for 24 hours' usage in standard class, for business purposes to take advantage of the availability of a high-speed mobile office, but some are also using it for leisure purposes such as online shopping.

Come on, Virgin Trains and others, let us have wi-fi! – Emma Jones

Comment: How satisfied though are people with the service? The only person who's emailed me via GNER's onboard service only managed to get through to me once he'd actually got off the train - his emails arrived several hours after he'd sent them. I don't think they'll be seeing many more of his tenners for a while.

Comment: You know, I think I stumbled across some wi-fi on a Virgin Train once but couldn't get it working either. It would be great if it did. When most of my work is online, travelling becomes sort of dead time. It would be a great help to be able to clear my inbox while on the train.
