I am Mette Baillie a Dane in Edinburgh. I am a couture designer and passionate small business owner.
Freja Designer Dressmaking was born in 1999. In the beginning I camped out in the living room of my Edinburgh flat. My husband and I had to weave our way past bales of fabric, spools of ribbon and trimmings and dress samples which were carefully positioned in every nook and cranny of our home.
The business has come a long way since those early days. Having quickly outgrown my living room, I built a team of extremely talented dressmakers who now work with me in my own studio. We have become known for our exquisite work in bridal wear, wedding outfits and formalwear.
Thanks to the support of our wonderful clients, our success has been recognised by the prestigious VOWS, the Scottish wedding industry service awards. We were crowned ‘Bridal Dress Designer – Retailer of the Year’ six times between 2009 and 2019. We have worked with many inspirational people and have been so grateful for the support they have shown us.
A few years previously I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I continued working throughout my treatment, determined not to let what I was going through limit what I could achieve, or diminish the special experience of the clients I was working with.
It taught me to be resourceful, to thrive, even when we don’t have control over the world around us. It prepared me for what lay ahead for the next phase in the business. I’ve been living free from cancer for 5 years now and, both as an individual and as a business, am stronger and more resilient than ever.
As a small company, we had the ability to be agile. We responded to the changing needs of our clients and came up with a range of products we could make quickly and sell on-line. We started out with face masks – the ultimate fashion accessory of Summer 2020 – and moved on to other pieces including bags, gloves and ponchos for wild swimming. We raised money for charity along the way. And the business survived.
I would now like to share my knowledge to small businesses, helping them become resiliant and able to grow.
