Getting started with Amazon Web Services (AWS)
What is AWS?
AWS is a collection of services that developers and IT professionals can use to build and run applications of various types.
When AWS started back in 2006, it began with foundational services, so things like Amazon EC2. It's a service for running virtual machines in the cloud. You create virtual machines with Windows or Linux operating systems, install your software and run your applications on top of that platform.
Over the past 12 now, AWS has launched around 125 services. Everything from machine learning and analytics through to the components you might need to build and run an Internet of Things application or a connected device application.
So there's now a really wide range of different services that developers can use to build and operate applications in a modern way using the cloud.
Where can developers find resources to get going?
There is the Getting Started Resource Center. This is a section on the AWS website that includes guides that are orientated around particular types of use cases. For example, things like:
websites and web applications
storing and retrieving data from the cloud
building machine learning applications
storing and processing data at high scale with big data and analytics apps
There are a number of tutorials in each category. You can take those and work through the examples, and it will give you a really good grounding in getting started with solutions of various types of use case.
