How Irish small businesses can thrive in a digital world

How Irish small businesses can thrive in a digital world

Posted: Mon 2nd Dec 2024

Small businesses are the lifeblood of Ireland's economy, making up 99% of the business population and contributing almost half of the country's total turnover.

Despite their significance, many small Irish firms are missing out on opportunities for growth and efficiency because they lack the resources to fully embrace technology.

A recent survey by Enterprise Nation, as part of our Tech Hub programme, highlights the challenges and opportunities for small businesses when it comes to adopting digital tools.

If you're a small business owner in Ireland, this is your invitation to explore how Tech Hub can help you unlock your business's full potential.

Why technology matters for your business

Technology isn't just about keeping up with the latest trends – it's about solving real problems. According to our survey:

  • 81% of small businesses believe technology can speed up processes and improve efficiency.

  • 75% expect digital tools will help them connect with customers faster.

  • Over half of respondents (55%) see technology as a way to simplify the complexities of running a business.

From streamlining accounting tasks to using artificial intelligence (AI) for better decision-making, the possibilities are endless.

And with more than half of businesses reporting that digital tools save them between one and three hours per week, it's clear that tech isn't just about working harder – it's about working smarter.

What's holding small businesses back?

Despite these benefits, many small businesses struggle to adopt technology. The survey reveals key barriers:

  • Cost: Over half (58%) of businesses say the high cost of subscriptions and licences is a major roadblock.

  • Skills gap: 38% feel they lack the necessary digital skills.

  • Expert advice: 27% cited a lack of guidance as a challenge.

Alarmingly, nearly a quarter (24%) of respondents described themselves as "not very" or "not at all active" in staying updated with tech trends. Yet, with the right support, they can most definitely overcome these obstacles.

How Tech Hub can help

The Tech Hub programme, launched in partnership with global tech giants like Amazon, Google and Square, is designed to address these challenges head-on. Here's how it works:

  • Personalised recommendations: Gain access to tools and resources tailored to your business's unique needs.

  • Digital training: Learn how to use technology to grow and sustain your business.

  • Expert support: Receive guidance from industry leaders and small business experts.

Tech Hub is not only a resource, it's a community. By connecting Irish small businesses with world-class technology companies and policymakers, the programme aims to amplify the voices of small businesses and drive digital transformation across the country.

A vision for the future

Through the Small Business Tech Consortium, Enterprise Nation is fostering collaboration between the tech sector and small businesses to create meaningful change. This initiative will provide tools and training to help shape the future of small business in Ireland:

  • Research: Conducting studies to understand small businesses' evolving needs.

  • Policy advocacy: Engaging with the government to make adopting tech more accessible and affordable.

  • Collaboration: Bringing together industry giants and local entrepreneurs to share insights and solutions.

Joanne Mangan, country manager for Enterprise Nation, sums it up best:

"Through Tech Hub and the Small Business Tech Consortium, we're creating a powerful support system for small businesses to succeed in the digital age. This is about breaking down barriers and showing small businesses that they're not alone in their journey."
