Emma's key points from the webinar

Introduction and overview

  • Enterprise Nation conducted a report in 2024, which highlighted that 62% of small businesses expressed a need for greater support and guidance with the hiring process.

  • The Talent Unlocked event aimed to address some of the common challenges that small businesses face when working to acquire staff and manage their workforces.

  • Topics included managing hybrid work environments, maintaining a strong company culture and using government initiatives to support hiring efforts.

Key challenges for small businesses

  • Attracting talent: Many small business owners struggle to position themselves as attractive employers in a competitive job market.

  • Managing hybrid work models: With employees working remotely or in hybrid set-ups, maintaining engagement and communication becomes more complex.

  • Building a strong company culture: Developing a cohesive brand identity and workplace values can be difficult when teams are dispersed and based in different locations.

  • Retaining employees: Small businesses need to find ways to motivate and keep talent engaged to prevent turnover.

  • Government support and programmes: Businesses may be unaware of the programmes available or struggle to navigate them, whether they're apprenticeship schemes or initiatives aimed at bringing people aged 50 and over back into the workforce, for example.

Following a degree in Law and Japanese, Emma joined international accounting firm Arthur Andersen, where she worked in London, Leeds and Manchester offices and set up the firm's Inward Investment practice that attracted overseas companies to locate in the UK. In 2000, bitten by the dot.com bug, Emma left the firm to start her first business, Techlocate. After 15 months, the company was successfully sold to Tenon plc. The experience of starting, growing and selling a business from a home base gave Emma the idea for Enterprise Nation which was launched in 2006 as the home business website. The company has since expanded to become a small business membership community of over 75,000 people who benefit from events and support: online and in person. Enterprise Nation also presents a campaigning voice to government and the media on behalf of its members. In 2021, Emma was awarded a CBE for services to small businesses and entrepreneurs.
