New research has uncovered 2024's most searched for small businesses on social commerce platform TikTok Shop.

According to the data by payment solutions provider SumUp, searches on Google for "how to sell on TikTok shop" have risen by 174% over the past year.

TikTok Shop allows business owners to sell their products themselves on TikTok and by collaborating with influencers.

SumUp looked at the most popular selling niches to show entrepreneurs how they could capitalise on the success of the platform.

  • With 365,000 searches and over 255,000 followers, the most popular small business is flavoured water bottle firm Cirkul.

  • In second place is sustainable underwear brand Parade Underwear which has attracted 236,000 followers and 244,000 searches.

  • Taking the third spot is Dossier Perfumes which is disrupting the perfume industry by selling affordable designer fragrances.

Top tips for starting a social commerce business

For entrepreneurs new to selling on social media, Corin Camenisch from SumUp offers the following tips:

  1. Lock down your usernames: Before doing anything else, make sure the social media usernames you want are available on your platforms of choice. Choose easy-to-read handles that perfectly represents your brand.

  2. Find your niche: In saturated markets, finding what makes you unique will give you an edge over your competition. Consider your target customer's pain points and how to overcome them to make your brand stand out.

  3. Define your audience: Having a clear idea of your target audience is crucial when promoting your brand on TikTok Shop. It allows you to determine key aspects such as marketing, price, and delivery.

Official TikTok figures released last year show 1.5m UK small and medium sized businesses are using the social media app to connect with their customers.
