I am an experienced archaeologist, and I have been fortunate enough to have worked on archaeological sites all around Ireland. I have an omnivorous interest in all periods and places – but with a special grá for Neolithic passage tombs, early medieval monastic sites and the Vikings.
My chief passion is in sharing the wonder of Irish archaeology and heritage sites with the general public. As well as the archaeological publication The Mill at Kilbegly (2013), I have written two popular guidebooks to Ireland’s Ancient East (2016) and The Wild Atlantic Way (2018), and a large number of articles in national media publications. I have also lectured in Public Archaeology at UCD School of Archaeology, and carried one of Ireland’s largest public archaeology projects at the Hellfire Club in the Dublin Mountains. I also the host of Amplify Archaeology Podcast series – that features interviews with Ireland's leading archaeologists.
In 2012, Róisín Burke and I, co-founded <a href='https://www.abartaheritage.ie/' target='_self'>Abarta Heritage</a>, an award-winning Tipperary-based company. We are passionate about empowering communities and helping to communicate Ireland’s story to visitors. We love to help empower people to take an active role in researching, protecting and presenting their local heritage, and we have worked with many local authorities and national bodies such as the Heritage Council to deliver flagship projects and innovative solutions to heritage engagement.
In 2021, we launched <a href='https://www.tuatha.ie/' target='_self'>Tuatha</a>, an online membership resource for those who want to enjoy a more meaningful connection with Ireland and the very best of its landscapes and heritage. All of our content is planned, developed and delivered by leading experts in Irish archaeology and sustainable tourism. Tuatha delivers reliable, in-depth knowledge to its members through articles, courses, tours and more, led by our team of award-winning archaeologists, and through collaboration with internationally-renowned experts.
As part of the service, we produce an ongoing series of regional itineraries which feature a range of multi-period site types. This is to demonstrate the value of exploring a place thoroughly. Too often, tourists – both domestic and international – visit the same high-profile sites without knowing that they are a stone’s throw away from other incredible monuments. Rather than being a checklist of mega-sites, we take a slower, more considered approach, providing context of the landscape and including a variety of monuments and features. With people taking the time to explore within a particular region, they are also more likely to provide meaningful support to the local economy.
